*Writing a Song could be a complex process, which would require years of study and experience...
... Or, it could be as simple as talking.

But you have to make sure when you "talk" to completely unknown people (imagine you are playing at a remote club and no one of the audience is your friend or relative) that they will listen what you are saying. And most important - they will remember you, they will want you to say more and will tell their friends about you.

We think that this reading (the critiques) will help you as a musician to avoid some mistakes, and will give more mass appeal to your songs. Or as a music lover you could satisfy your curiosity.

Independent musicians and songwriters:

When you should read these critiques, and when could this reading help you create a better song?

  1. Before writing or recording a song - you can easily avoid some common mistakes and give more value to your efforts and money.
  2. During the writing or recording of your song - you can easily avoid some common mistakes and give more value to your efforts and money.
  3. After writing or recording a song - you can easily check for common mistakes and eventually prevent them from re-occurring in your future songs - and give more value to your efforts and money.

Some common mistakes in creating a song:

- Is your Chorus strong enough (you didn't forget to put it there, right)?
- Is your intro longer than the rest of your track?
- Is the guitar more important than the lead vocal?
- Or maybe, do you have a one million dollars worth Chorus, which is well hidden between the intro and verse?!!
- Did you put a title like "Me and You" for your Trash metal song?
- Did you put too many songs into your song?

Music Lovers:

Are you just curious? Or do you really want to know what a musician's backstage
job is like? It is not an easy job, at least from a successfull musician's point of view.

At times it takes tons of efforts, hard work and money to create a pleasant song - for you: to share with friends, fall in love with the best person in your life or just to have a good time.

As you know, this site is all about Independent Artists and music.
But what is the difference, in this case, between a major Artist and an Indie one?

The major Artist has a major Record Label behind him/her. That means lots of money, time and people involved in the creation of a song. They will hire "the best" songwriter, manager, producer, recording studio, lawyer, musicians and instruments and often this team will work (full time) 6-12 or even more months on an Album. They will shoot a multi-million dollar music video, will pay MTV and radio stations to play the "Hit". They will pay an advertiser for the nice spots you watch on music video Channels and will even create some "scandal" for the most "alternative" (those with particular music tastes) of you.

Sounds right?
Well, in this way, it sounds more expensive than right, but trust me - it is right!

Whether you are listening to the Radio, buying CDs or playing with your PlayStation -
it has to do with the Music Business.
And for the majors (IMHO), it is more business than music.
For Indie Artists (and here is the BIG difference) - it is more music than business.
In the Independent context: put the lack of big money, big teams and time - and you
can see how much more difficult it can be for them to create commercial Hits.

Knowing that, you should appreciate their work for being genuine, or in other words:
*the true musician's passion for music*; You can easily find out (just browse our Music Videos section) that many Independent Artists have stronger and better songs than some major Artists;
So, knowing that, you can realize that often, being an Indie musician, means doing the
job of a multi-million Record Label's team. Or in other words: how much talent, passion and hard work a single Artist or Band have to "invest" in each single song. And the fact is that, an Independent song, has much more personal value than any given major track.

Back to the subject:
What does an Independent musician's backstage job consist of?
You can find the answer in our critiques. Read them, and whenever you can, make a comment, or feel free to send a note to that Artist. Your comment will probably make the Indie music an even better experience!
