Otherwise the Destiny's Child (or whoever the current trend is)
CD is just a click/push play away.
But let's keep listening to Danielle Swaby. The track has an artistic
and commercial appeal that could be of interest to radio stations.
And this is the most important feature.
Also, good songwriting and passionate performance are clearly evident.
The song structure is well organized and the arrangement helps the
overall communication of musical ideas. The choice of instruments
complements the R&B sound (this is not Hip Hop, right!) and
is in track with the melodic interpretation of lyrics.
Well, a few optimizations will make the commercial appeal definitely
of interest to radio stations.
- The "well organized structure" could be further cleaned.
In addition to the shorter intro, the four instrumental measures
between the first Chorus and second Verse are not needed. Reasons:
1) the rhythm pattern is enough persistent thru the entire track,
so there's no need to demonstrate it additionally; 2) currently
there's no heavy use of vocals or major harmony changes that would
justify those four measures.
- The arrangement should play a more important role in the dynamic
development (which needs to be increased) of the song. The Pre Chorus
comes naturally after the Verse. The underlying organ and use of
vocals bring a new life into the song. This helps maintain the listener's
interest, and is important. Then the Chorus comes but doesn't seem
to bring anything new, different, or stronger. Assuming that melodically
the Chorus is OK (memorable, unique), the arrangement is what will
make it really noticeable. The most appealing approach would be
to intensify the rhythm. Add percussion to the pizzicato or to "I
can't take this". Or you could simply slightly change the rhythm
during the Chorus, or add a new one on top of the main one. Also
you could use the synth to add intensity to the rhythm.
And to finish with the Chorus, what about leaving the last "this
silent treatment" without bass and drums? Give it a try, it
would increase the dynamic significance of the whole song.
- The instruments are well chosen, apart from the fact that the
synth reminds the 80's sound. This might be a good or not so good
thing depending on your intentions.
- The drums only part before the last Pre Chorus and Chorus could
be easily enhanced too. Again, add intensity to the rhythm, or as
alternative you could think it as the time for solo. That electronic
piano can be further exposed and contribute musically to the track.
